How to reach Rifugio Roda di Vaèl: trail info
The starting point is Passo Costalunga (1,752 m), easily reached by car either from Val di Fassa or Val d’Ega. Here you can leave your car before setting off.
We begin along trail 548, which climbs gently through the forest. The path is well marked and occasionally opens up to reveal glimpses of the Latemar massif through the trees.
After a pleasant walk we reach a junction, where we continue on trail 552. The ascent remains gradual, following a forest road until we arrive at Rifugio Paolina (2,125 m). This is the perfect place for a short break: the view of the Latemar is simply breathtaking.
Leaving Rifugio Paolina behind, the trail continues with a wide traverse beneath the towering cliffs of the Catinaccio. This stretch is one of the most spectacular: you walk immersed in a truly Alpine landscape, with views stretching from the Latemar all the way to the Marmolada.
Along the way we pause at a very special spot: the Christomannos Monument, a bronze eagle overlooking the valley. It was erected in honor of Theodor Christomannos, a pioneer of Alpine tourism in Tyrol.
The trail then continues with a gentle, never too demanding climb, until we finally reach Rifugio Roda di Vaèl. At this point, the panorama opens up in every direction across the Dolomites, with spectacular views of the Marmolada, Sassolungo, and the Sella Group.
Rifugio Roda di Vaèl is one of the most beloved huts in the Catinaccio. Its privileged location is the perfect starting point for further treks, via ferratas, and circular routes.
For instance, for those seeking a longer adventure, it’s possible to continue from Roda di Vaèl toward Rifugio Vajolet or Rifugio Gardeccia.

If you’re looking for a hike that will make you fall in love with the Dolomites, don’t miss the trail from Rifugio Paolina to Rifugio Roda di Vaèl. It’s one of the best experiences for anyone who wants to discover the huts of the Catinaccio and spend a true day in the mountains.
Make sure to plan your outing carefully. Always check the weather before setting off, and remember to respect both nature and the people around you.
